ODOM: BEWARE OF GIFTS REP SAYS ADIDAS NOT INVOLVED ODOM: BEWARE OF GIFTS REP SAYS ADIDAS NOT INVOLVED
facebook email Even though Christ the King basketball star Lamar Odom accepted gifts from Adidas rep Sonny Vaccaro, it likely will have no bearing on his eligibility for the coming high school season . . . or beyond.
Both Ray Nash, the co president of the city Catholic High School Athletic Association, and Steve Mallonee, the NCAA’s director of legislative services, said that Odom’s status for both high school and future college competition is not currently in doubt.
“If a kid’s eligibility is in question in relation to being a non amateur, then the CHSAA would look at it,” Nash said. “If he was declared a non amateur by anyone, we would have to look at it.
Mallonee said schools recruiting Odom, 16, may have to examine the circumstances surrounding Vaccaro’s gifts for potential violations. Until then, the NCAA has no jurisdiction concerning Odom.
“That wouldn’t be something that we would be investigating; we’re an association of colleges,” Mallonee said. “I wanted to buy him a winter coat, but they don’t sell them in Los Angeles,” Vaccaro said. But Vaccaro insists the shopping trip wasn’t a part of Adidas business.
“I did buy Lamar clothes,
but I’ve bought clothes for a lot of kids,” he said. “But to say Adidas did this is totally wrong. I did it with Pam. We’ve probably bought clothing for 50 kids. It’s charity and it comes from me, not my employer. Bryant declared himself eligible for the NBA draft at the end of his senior year in high school, a move Odom is contemplating.
Odom, who averaged 16.
6 points and 11 rebounds last year, also is considering eight colleges: Kentucky, St. John’s, UNLV, UConn, Michigan, Kansas, UCLA and Fresno State.
“He came West because he might go pro,” Vaccaro said. “I wanted Lamar to talk to Kobe. I want Lamar to know as much as he can, to have the choice.”Lamar’s really upset about this (eligibility controversy),” Charles said. “I think it’s obvious who started this,” Vaccaro said. “Who has something to gain by discrediting Adidas?Nike representatives denied the charge.
