adida trainers Adam sets his sights at the top
Unofficial high marks soon put the sales manager for an Exeter based crane firm in big demand and in April last year he qualified as a referee. In his first season Adam would have been content with one Somerset County and three Western District matches.
But since the start of the season Adam has also run the line on three Somerset Premier matches as well as being in charge of county cup matches and several under 18 floodlight county youth games.
Adam, whose partner Tracy has a relative in Premiership official Ron Ganfield, is the son of former Trowbridge League press and development officer and Chippenham Town commercial manager Tim and mum Jenny.
Tim said: “For three decades while covering Western League matches for the Wiltshire Times and Chippenham News, I was not exactly number one fan among referees. I will probably never live this down but seriously we are both proud of what Adam has achieved in such a short space of time.”
Mr Penwell added: “It was so encouraging when a club chairman, whose county league side had just been beaten 6 2, approached me with glowing comments. He could not believe it was Adam’s first season. That made my Christmas.”
Like all soccer mad schoolboys Adam always dreamt of playing for Manchester United. That dream may well have expired but instead he could be on his way to visiting Old Trafford after all as a top class official.
