“I graduated in 40 years ago from here, so I know what’s going through and what he’s going to go through,” said Dennis Hugo, whose son is attending the AFA.
The Class of 2019 is one of the largest classes admitted to the Academy in recent years. It also has a large female percentage, making up 30 percent of the class.
“I know everyone says to serve your country, but it actually is an honor to be able to stand here and say, ‘I’m fighting for you. I’m fighting to keep this place safe,'” said Gabrielle Singler, a basic cadet.
“I rode the bus this morning and I got the shivers when the speech started, just remembering when I was here as a Basic riding the bus and in processing through this. It’s been a short four years to this point now,” said Cadet Col. Taylor W. Perkins, a basic cadet training cadet group commander.
From haircuts, boot pick up and reporting for duty, the basic cadets are ready.
“I think everyone here has had those moments where they question whether they want to be here, and it takes a lot of focus and a lot of dedication to really push through some of those struggles at the Academy,” Perkins said.
