Windsor men went the extra mile Saturday afternoon to raise awareness for sexual violence prevention by stepping into brand new pairs of red pumps for the Walk a Mile in her Shoes initiative, hosted by the Sexual Assault Crisis Centre.

Around 100 men wearing $5,000 worth of footwear tread carefully down Windsors streets outside the Riverside Sportsmen Club for the annual event. Organizer Lydia Fiorini said the walk brought a much needed male perspective to the ongoing public debate about sexual violence prevention.

Violence against women and children is often a conversation men feel left out of, Fiorini said, and the annual walk plays a vital role in bringing local men together and providing an opportunity for them to participate in a solution to gender based violence.

The reality is that we need to keep talking about it, because its not ending. The more we have events like this, the more we engage men, the more were working in partnership to really end violence, she said.

This crime doesnt seem to avoid anybody. The reality is they have sisters, wives, children who have been affected somehow, but I think it gives them the opportunity to name it, the opportunity to talk about it, and not necessarily feeling like theyre alone and that nobody can talk about it.

Gender based violence is rarely an easy subject to broach, Fiorini said, but the unusual sight of a large group of men traipsing down Windsors streets in womens pumps brings a quirky spirit to an otherwise dark topic.

I think at first, men are sort of hesitant I have to wear those shoes? But then I think they recognize the realities of why theyre wearing those shoes, and theyre really supportive of the idea of ending violence, she said.

Frank Renaud, a third year student at the University of Windsor, donned his scarlet heels along with the rest of his football team Saturday, and said his own attitude towards sexualized violence hit a turning point after he saw women being continually objectified and harassed at the restaurant he worked at.

Its crazy, but people dont actually realize how much women are abused, he said. Were all human and were all equal, and everybody wants to enjoy a nice dinner or a drink with their friends without having to worry about being objectified or getting stared at.

As a football team, were here to show that despite the fact that a lot of people wouldve seen this stereotype that were very abusive against women, we actually dont support that at all.

Steve Palmer, a professor from the University of Windsors history department, said he doubts the red pumpswill be making frequent appearances in his wardrobe, but the point of physically enduring the shoes helps foster a sense of empathy among the men.

The concept is good in order to be respectful of others, you have to have empathy for them, he said. Part of the basic problem of male violence against women is a lack of empathy, a lack of understanding of where theyre coming from. This is to promote empathy.
